Stephen Colbert thinks the August 2 debt limit deadline is just another arbitrary, made-up government date — like, say, Thursday. And what’s worse, Colbert on Tuesday suspected the deadline might even be a conspiracy.

A “Muslim-Nazi-Vietcong conspiracy to keep America fiscally solvent,” no less. How does he figure? Well, Colbert said, Ramadan starts the day before, it happens to be the 77th anniversary of Hitler becoming führer of Germany and it’s the 47th anniversary of the Golf of Tonkin incident.

Unless there’s an even more sinister explanation, like President Obama’s August 3 birthday/fundraiser bash, as Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) suggested.

“Of course,” Colbert said. “Obama just wants to raise the debt ceiling so he can raise the roof!”
