The recently-announced civilian trials in New York City for a number of Guantanamo detainees — including the self-professed mastermind of the 9/11 attacks — are “appropriate,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said this morning on Meet the Press.

“It is appropriate to go forward,” she said, adding that “I want to see them brought to justice.”

The most important thing to me is they pay the ultimate price for what they did to us.

Clinton also said Gitmo would be closed — but wouldn’t commit to a specific deadline, putting it instead at “as soon as possible.”

The secretary of state also had some tough words for Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s government, saying “there has not been the kind of open, transparent, accountable government that stood against corruption” that the country’s people want.

“We’re going to expect more from the Afghan government going foward,” she said.

Clinton also said she’s never met former GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin — whose memoir will be released this week and includes at least one passage praising Clinton — but would like to.

I absolutely would look forward to having coffee. I’ve never met her. I think it would be very interesting to sit down and talk with her.

Clinton made similar statements this morning on ABC’s This Week.
