California candidate for governor Steve Poizner (R) said today that he “would even go further” than Arizona on immigration if elected, and criticized primary opponent Meg Whitman for supposedly not supporting Arizona’s controversial law.

On Fox News today, Poizner defended an ad he released that attacks Whitman for having “the same position on illegal immigration as the president of Mexico.”

“My views on illegal immigration have been crystal clear,” he said, while Whitman “doesn’t support what’s going on in Arizona.” Poizner also accused Whitman of only opposing the Arizona law because “she’s thinking of the general election.”

He continued: “In California I would even go further. I would stop all taxpayer-funded benefits for people that come here illegally,” adding that he would also “revoke your business license” if you hire illegal immigrants.
