Bush, 37, smiles during an interview with The Associated Press in Frisco, Texas. Bush is running for Texas Land Commissioner, a post unfamiliar to most Texans, because he says it best suits his skills, not because it could launch him to bigger things in America’s largest red state. Born in Houston, Bush grew up in Florida, graduated from and played baseball for Rice University in Houston before teaching school in inner-city Miami and working on George W. Bush's presidential campaign. He earned a law degree from the University of Texas and clerked for a federal judge, then founded a capital company in Fort Worth. He served an eight-month tour in Afghanistan in 2010 with U.S. Naval Intelligence. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Yet another Bush may be rising among the ranks in Texas politics.

George P. Bush, the 37-year-old son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, easily defeated businessman David Watts to secure the Republican nomination for Texas land commissioner Tuesday.

George P. Bush’s mother, Columba, is from Mexico. His grandfather and uncle are former Presidents George H.W. and George W. Bush, who also was a Texas governor.

The Fort Worth attorney has worked to tamp down lofty expectations. But the Texas GOP has touted him and his political royalty surname as key to wooing Hispanic voters.

Bush becomes the overwhelming favorite in November against former El Paso Democratic Mayor John Cook.

He has raised $3.5-plus million — an unheard of sum for land commissioner, who administers state-owned lands and mineral resources.
