Three New Orleans police officers charged this week in the post-Katrina shootings on Danziger Bridge have pleaded not guilty.
Robert Gisevius, Kenneth Bowen and Anthony Villavaso pleaded not guilty today to charges of civil rights violations and conspiracy for allegedly shooting unarmed civilians in the days after Hurricane Katrina, killing two and wounding four, and then attempting to cover it up.
Former officer Robert Faulcon has not entered a plea. The Times-Picayune reports that he turned himself in in Texas, and is being transferred to New Orleans.
The Department of Justice yesterday announced the indictment of the four men, plus two supervisors who are accused of helping to cover up the officers’ actions that day.
Gisevius, Bowen, Villavaso and Faulcon, if convicted, face life imprisonment or the death penalty.
They are being held until Friday, when a hearing will be held to decide if they should remain in custody until their trial.
