Two years and four months after someone disclosed the immigration status of then-candidate Barack Obama’s aunt to the media ahead of the 2008 election, government investigators are still probing whether any federal officials improperly leaked the information.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Office of Professional Responsibility has an “ongoing law enforcement investigation” into the matter, Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) officer Catrina M. Pavlik-Keenan wrote in response to a FOIA request from TPM for any report issued on the matter. The request for the documents was denied because the case was still open.

The Associated Press first reported just three days before the 2008 election that Obama’s aunt Zeituni Onyango was in the country illegally. A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official told TPM in August that the investigation was wrapping up.
