The White House announced today that it’s sent a fourth bill to BP for costs related to its still-leaking oil well, this one for $99.7 million.
The administration sent the same bill to Anadarko and MOEX, a subsidiary of Japanese company Mitsui, both partners in the well. It also sent the bill to Transocean, which owns the rig.
The first three bills, which totaled $122.3 million, have been paid by BP, according to the government.
BP has sent bills to both Anadarko and Mitsui for their shares — 25 percent and 10 percent, respectively — of the response costs. Anadarko has refused to pay BP the $272 million bill, saying BP caused the spill through misconduct or negligence and therefore has sole responsibility. Mitsui, billed $111 million, has also reportedly refused to pay.
BP is paying directly for some response efforts, including the drilling of relief wells, and reimbursing the federal government for its costs.
