Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said in an interview aired Sunday that he never supported New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and only ever rooted him on.

Trump seemed to contradict himself over his support for de Blasio during an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

“I never supported Bill de Blasio,” Trump said when host John Dickerson asked him to clarify his stance.

Dickerson read Trump a quote he reportedly gave in which he said that he thought “pretty strongly” that de Blasio would be a “good mayor.”

“Well, I did say that because I deal in New York and frankly, I hoped he
was a good mayor,” Trump replied. “He’s turned out to be a terrible mayor, he
doesn’t know what he’s doing. I mean, the guy is incompetent. But when
he first got elected, but that’s not supporting him.”

Trump rambled on for a bit until Dickerson was about to dismiss him, but Trump circled back to de Blasio.

“But that’s not supporting somebody. I mean, that’s rooting somebody
on,” he continued. “I have to live with him. I have many, many buildings in New York, I have a big business in New York. I wish he were good, but he’s not.”
