Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said he’s looking forward to the Republican primary in response to Rep. Steve Stockman’s decision to jump into the race.

“I look forward to the primary. There are six or seven of us in the race. We’ll see who gets traction and who doesn’t, but none of us are entitled to these positions,” Cornyn said, according to the Dallas Morning News on Tuesday.

On Monday, just 15 minutes before the deadline, Stockman, a tea party favorite, filed to run in the Republican primary against Cornyn. Stockman is the highest-profile candidate running in the Republican primary against Cornyn.

“We have to go out and make the case to voters and win the election,” Cornyn continued. “I look forward to having a good discussion.”

So far, Stockman’s candidacy faces some financial challenges. According to FEC records, the Texas congressman has less than $40,000 cash on hand. By contrast, Cornyn has a war chest of $7 million.
