Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) warned Thursday that lawmakers should actually take the time to read the budget deal he reached with Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) before they criticize it.
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) on Tuesday called the deal “irresponsible” and vowed to oppose it, even though he voted against sequestration cuts. MSNBC host Joe Scarborough asked Ryan what he would say to Rubio’s criticism.
“Read the deal and get back to me,” Ryan said on “Morning Joe.” “Look, people are going to do what they need to do. In the minority you don’t have the burden of governing, of getting things done.”
“Here’s what this does,” he continued. “It reduces the deficit without raising taxes. We prevent the military from getting deeply cut again. And we prevent two government shutdowns from occurring this year. I think that’s in the interest of our country. I think that advances our principles.”
L. Brent Bozell III, the chairman of conservative group ForAmerica who touted Ryan as a vice presidential candidate during the 2012 election, also turned on the congressman after the deal was announced and predicted the agreement would spark a revolt within the GOP.
