An officer working for Liberty University reportedly shot and killed a student off campus Tuesday in what school officials described as an isolated incident.

The school said the shooting was the result of an altercation between a university emergency services officer and a male student at an off-campus women’s residential hall.

The entire Lynchburg, Va. campus was “open and operating as normal,” the school said.

“This appears to be an isolated incident and there is not any ongoing concern for the safety of students or the community,” the university said in a statement, according to television station WTVR.

Liberty University was founded in 1971 by late evangelical leader Jerry Falwell.
