President Barack Obama met Pope Francis at the Vatican on Thursday, calling himself a “great admirer” of the popular pontiff.
The two men exchanged gifts during their hour long meeting, where they discussed income inequality. Obama gifted Francis a custom-made box of seeds, according to a pool transcript, in honor of the pontiff’s wish to open the gardens of the papal summer residence to the public.
“These I think are carrots,” Obama said, holding a pouch of seeds. “Each one has a different seed in it. The box is made from timber from the first cathedral to open in the United States in Baltimore.”
