President Obama was briefed Sunday on the shooting at an Orlando nightclub that left approximately 20 people dead and dozens of others injured, according to a statement released by his press secretary.

The shooter opened fire in the gay nightclub and died after a shootout with SWAT members. FBI officials said early Sunday that the incident was being investigated as an act of terrorism.

President Obama was briefed by Lisa Monaco, assistant to the President for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the victims,” the press secretary said in the statement. “The President asked to receive regular updates as the FBI, and other federal officials, work with the Orlando Police to gather more information, and directed that the federal government provide any assistance necessary to pursue the investigation and support the community.”

  1. There must be strong evidence this was indeed a terrorist act. I’m sure the investigation will reveal the shooter’s motives behind the awful shooting.

  2. I’m sure Alex Jones is already crafting his conspiracy: “This was a black flag operation run right out of the White House basement. It was, our sources (aka: his colon) have confirmed, a plot devised by the Muslim Kenyan usurper himself to confiscate our guns.” And it will be echoed in one form or another across the Right Wingnuttery blogosphere. Their fear and hate will grow and the never ending cycle of fear-fueled rage will continue to grow in this society.
Trump may, if someone doesn’t take away his phone, tweet that all Muslims must be rounded up and deported from our shores! And his devoted mouthbreathing and hate-saturated sheople will bleat their agreement. “Get them out! Stop em’ from coming in! blah…blah…”

  3. It might matter that the shooter’s family is from Afghanistan but he was born (and died) here. Calls for sealing the borders and building walls to follow.

I read “domestic terrorism” on huffpo. But still not many details. Now which major political party promotes easy guns and anti-LGBTQ sentiment?

Edit: possibly Islamic-extremist inspired domestic terrorism. Either way, some asshole with a gun.

  5. Yeah, just like all Nazi’s should have been banned from entering America too!
