President Obama celebrated the character of House Speaker John Boehner during a Friday press conference, saying he “is a good man. He is a patriot.” Obama said that although he has had “a lot of disagreements” with Boehner, he had a good working relationship with the speaker, who plans to step down on Oct. 30.

“He always conducted himself with courtesy and civility with me,” Obama said. “He has kept his word when he made a commitment. He is somebody who has been gracious, and I think most importantly he is someone who understands that in government, in governance, you don’t get 100 percent of what you want, but you have to work with people you disagree with, sometimes strongly, in order to do the people’s business.”

Obama said the news of Boehner’s departure “took him by surprise”, but that he called he speaker after learning about his resignation on Friday morning.

He said he will not “prejudge who the next speaker will be,” but hopes that Boehner’s replacement will be open to compromise. He said the next speaker should understand the importance of keeping the federal government open.

“There’s no weakness in that,” Obama said. “That’s what government is.”

Obama went on to say Boehner was a man who had to face down unruly mobs, never appreciated at work, always criticized by all parties, and finally, basically forced to resign. Yes sir! Orange really really is the new black.

Ted Cruz on Boehner resignation: “I have long called on Republican leadership to do something unusual, which is lead.”
“If it is correct that the speaker, before he resigns, has cut a deal with Nancy Pelosi to fund the Obama administration for the rest of its tenure, to fund Obamacare, to fund executive amnesty, to fund Planned Parenthood, to fund implementation of this Iran deal — and then, presumably, to land in a cushy K Street job after joining with the Democrats to implement all of President Obama’s priorities, that is not the behavior one would expect of a Republican speaker of the House.”

    Contrast and compare.
