FreedomWorks had its best fundraising year ever in 2012, taking in $15 million, thanks in large part to four unnamed donors who accounted for nearly 60 percent of the group’s funding, The Center for Public Integrity reported on Thursday.
The numbers come from an annual tax report FreedomWorks filed earlier this year. The document shows that the four unnamed contributors donated at least $1 million each, including one who gave nearly $4.9 million.
According to The Center for Public Integrity, 106 unnamed donors gave the FreedomWorks at least $5,000 each in 2012.
From The Center for Public Integrity:
The IRS documents detail millions of dollars spent in 2012 on “public education,” “events,” tracking “legislation on Capitol Hill” and alerting “members when issues of interest become relevant.”
As TPM has previously reported, FreedomWorks hit a rough patch in the run-up to the 2012 election. Former House majority leader Dick Armey left the group in September, following a failed coup attempt. He ultimately accepted an $8 million settlement from a board member of the organization.
