Fox News host Martha MacCallum asked former New York Gov. George Pataki whether he would put mosques under surveillance during a forum for the second tier of Republican presidential candidates on Thursday afternoon.

“How far are you willing to go to root out this problem here at home?” MacCallum asked Pataki, who presided over the Empire State when terrorists attacked the World Trade towers on 9/11. “Would you put mosques, for example, potentially under surveillance? And keep in mind that conservatives are increasingly concerned in this country with religious liberty.”

Pataki responded that “encouraging a fellow American to engage in violent jihad and kill an American here” is not protected by the First Amendment. He added that radical Islamists need to be “shut down whether or not they’re in prisons preaching or in mosques preaching.”
