One of the moderators of Fox Business Network’s Republican presidential debate on Thursday asked Ohio Gov. John Kasich what he thought it meant for the country that Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), a “self-avowed socialist,” could be the Democratic presidential nominee.

Maria Bartiromo pointed to Sanders’ surge in the polls and noted that Vice President Joe Biden recently praised the Democratic presidential candidate’s genuine approach to income inequality.

“Governor Kasich, Hillary Clinton is getting some serious competition from senator Bernie Sanders,” Bartiromo asked. “So what does it say about our country that a candidate who is a self-avowed socialist, and who doesn’t think a 90 percent tax rate is too high, could be the democratic nominee?”

Kasich sidestepped the question and said that if that were the case, Republicans would win every state in the general election.

“I know Bernie and I can promise you he’s not gonna be the President of the United States,” he said.
