During a Wednesday interview on MSNBC, Rep. Mac Thornberry (R-TX), the chair of the House Armed Services Committee, would not say whether he believes Donald Trump is prepared to be president and commander in chief.
“Do you have confidence in Donald Trump’s abilities as it relates to being commander in chief?” MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson asked Thornberry.
“I think there are a number of national security folks who have concerns about what both candidates have said and done,” Thornberry replied, adding that it will be important to listen to both candidates’ proposals for the military leading up to the election.
Jackson then asked Thornberry if he personally has concerns about Trump’s ability to be commander in chief.
“Sure. I’ve got concerns about what both candidates have said,” he responded.
The MSNBC host followed up to ask Thornberry to detail specific concerns.
The congressman again declined to single out Trump and said that there have “been a number of things both candidates have said that go against the consensus of opinion since World War II.”
“It’s no surprise that much of the country has concerns about these two candidates, and part of the reason they have concerns is there’s been lots of this back and forth name calling,” he said, adding that he hopes to hear more about the military from both Trump and Hillary Clinton.
