The League of Women Voters condemned President Donald Trump’s “false claims” about massive voter fraud in the 2016 election.

“President Trump is calling for a major investigation into voter fraud – in an election that he won,” Chris Carson, the president of the group, wrote in the statement released Wednesday.

She said there was “no need” for an investigation into claims of massive election fraud, which she decried as “a myth perpetuated to push election laws that restrict voting.”

“We cannot allow false claims to drive policies that will limit participation in our election process,” Carson wrote. “There is no need for an investigation into a non-existent problem. The issue has been studied and put to rest.”

Trump announced in a series of tweets posted Wednesday morning that he will order a “major” investigation into voter fraud, which he claims cost him the popular vote.

His claims have been widely and extensively debunked.
