Jon Stewart will leave “The Daily Show” later this year, Comedy Central confirmed on Tuesday evening. Rumors first leaked Tuesday afternoon that Stewart had announced his departure to guests during the taping of that evening’s show.

Comedy Central President Michele Ganeless thanked Stewart in a statement released to multiple news outlets:

Jon will remain at the helm of The Daily Show until later this year. He is a comic genius, generous with his time and talent, and will always be a part of the Comedy Central family.
According to the AV Club, Stewart will announce his retirement from “The Daily Show” during Tuesday night’s episode.
