Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said her husband and former President Bill Clinton would make a good running mate, but that he’s not able to be Vice President under the Constitution.
But the thought had “crossed” her mind, Hillary told Mario Lopez for a segment on “Extra” scheduled to air Monday and Tuesday.
“He would be good, but he’s not eligible under the Constitution,” Hillary told Lopez. “He has served his two terms and I think the argument would be as Vice President it would not be possible for him to ever succeed to the position — at least that’s what I’ve been told… It has crossed my mind.”
Actually, he is eligible. The 22nd Amendment says that you can only be “elected” to two terms. It would not preclude Bill being VP nor would it preclude Bill from taking over if necessary. He just couldn’t run again.
The text of the 22nd amendment reads: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.”
Being elected to the office of Vice President is not being elected to the office of President, nor would succeeding to the office of President, so I’m not sure he is ineligible, Nevertheless, it would be a dumb idea.
He’d probably be a very good Secretary of State, and as far as I know, would be eligible. That’s where I would appoint him were I Mrs. Clinton.
Correct.
and I’m not sure it was politically smart to say that she has thought of it . . . just gives ammunition to those arguing against political dynasties.
