NEW YORK (AP) — The megahit musical “Hamilton” has grabbed a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations, the biggest haul in Broadway history and another notch in the show’s march into theatrical history.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop-flavored biography about the first U.S. treasury secretary on Tuesday broke the 15-nominations record held by “The Producers” and “Billy Elliot.” ”Hamilton” was nominated in virtually every category it could compete in, from acting to scenic design.

Next month, it will compete for Broadway’s biggest crown — best new musical — with “Bright Star,” ”School of Rock,” ”Shuffle Along” and “Waitress.”

The best play category is composed of “Eclipsed,” ”The Father,” ”The Humans” and “King Charles III.”

The awards will be handed out June 12, with James Corden playing host from the Beacon Theatre in New York.

Read that again, and see if you don’t also think that this just has to be from the Onion.

  2. Some friends are flying to NY tomorrow just to see Hamilton.

God, I really hate them now

  3. Yes. It sounded like a gimmick to me – until I heard the music. Now I’m playing the CD & waiting for a chance to see it live. What an amazing story!

  4. As Hamilton got older, he got to be kind of a dick. I’ll bet anything that he had syphilis and it affected his judgment. That is really the only explanation for some of the things he did. Burr gets a bad rap from history, but he was not a bad guy, although he did some odd things later in life too.
Sure would be nice if there could be a touring company for Hamilton. Would like to see it sometime.

  5. Burr gets a bad rap? While the treason charge weren’t proven, there are enough quotes from Burr to suggest that Hamilton’s words in the musical are accurate: “When all is said and all is don, Jefferson has beliefs – Burr has none.”
