Virginia Republican Senate candidate Ed Gillespie’s campaign released a new attack ad against Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) where Gillespie vows to oppose legislation to make The Washington Redskins change their name.

Gillespie, who has been so far behind Warner in the polls he made news for actually pulling some of his own TV spots in the month before the election, attacks Warner for refusing to say whether he supports legislation backed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to force the Washington Redskins to change their name.

“Why Warner fight the anti-Redskins bill. Why won’t he answer the question?” a voiceover in the ad said.

“I’ll answer the question,” Gillespie then said in the ad. “I’ll oppose the anti-Redskins bill. Let’s focus on creating jobs, raising take-home pay, and making our nation safer and let the Redskins decide what to call their team.”

As it happens, Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder has actually donated $5,200 to Warner for his 2014 re-election campaign.

As TPM has previously noted, the Washington Redskins have urged their fans to fight Reid’s push to get the team to change its name.

The TPM Polltracker finds Warner with a 10.6 point lead over the rest of the field.
