Following President Barack Obama’s one-on-one meeting with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Wednesday the “robust debate” surrounding the Democratic presidential nominating contest is “good for our democracy.”
“It’s good for the Democratic party for there to be such a robust debate going on about who should be our party’s nominee,” Earnest said during his daily press briefing. “That debate is good for the party, it’s also good for our democracy.”
Earnest said the briefing started right as Obama’s meeting with Sanders ended, so he didn’t get to speak with the President about the 45-minute meeting. But Earnest said he anticipated the two would discuss advancing Democratic values and that Obama may get to reminisce about his time campaigning.
He added that the President still plans to be actively involved in the general election.
