Who needs facts in a debate?

During a heated-back-and-forth Saturday night in the Republican debate, Ted Cruz declared to CBS debate moderator John Dickerson that the U.S. has “80 years of precedent of not confirming Supreme Court justices in an election year.”

Dickerson interrupted and reminded him that Justice Kennedy was actually confirmed in 1988. Cruz interjected that it was 1987.

“That’s the question, is it appointing or confirming?” Dickerson said.

“In this case it’s both. If I could finish–” Cruz said.

“Sorry, I want to get the facts straight for the audience. I apologize,” Dickerson said.

At which point the debate audience booed energetically.
