A man in Berthoud, Colo. shot himself in the leg as he was driving to a sporting goods store to return a gun on Thursday evening, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office told the Lafayette News.

Sgt. Brian Zierlein said the man, 53-year-old David Mitchell, took out the gun “one last time while he was in traffic to inspect it, and didn’t realize there was a round in the chamber. He pulled the trigger and shot himself.”

Police said Mitchell would not need surgery for the shooting and was expected to recover, according to the Lafayette News.
