New York Police Department Commissioner Bill Bratton denounced the behavior of an NYPD detective who was allegedly caught on camera berating and screaming at an immigrant Uber cab driver, WNBC reported on Wednesday.
Bratton also noted, during a news conference, that the officer had been placed on modified duty and transferred out of the NYPD’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, according to WNBC.
“That officer’s behavior reflected poorly on everyone who wears our uniform,” Bratton reportedly said. “In that kind of encounter, anger like that is unacceptable. In any kind of encounter, discourtesy like that and language like that is unacceptable.”
Bratton also added that the actions of the officer, who who was reportedly identified earlier in the day as Detective Patrick Cherry, made the relationship between civilians and police officers more difficult, according to WNBC.
“No good cop can watch that without a wince,” he said. “All good cops know that the officer just made their jobs a little bit harder.”
Bratton also reportedly apologized to the driver and the two passengers who reportedly filmed the exchange.
The investigation into the officer’s behavior was ongoing and being handled by the Civilian Complaint Review Board, Bratton reportedly said.
“The actions engaged by the officer based on the video alone would indicate that those fall under the jurisdiction of the CCRB and their particular areas of jurisdiction.”
