Vice President Joe Biden said Thursday during a visit to Mexico that he felt “almost obliged to apologize” for the anti-Mexican rhetoric coming from certain presidential candidates this election cycle.

“There’s been a lot of damaging and incredibly inaccurate rhetoric, and I would argue I feel almost obliged to apologize for some of what my political colleagues have said,” Biden said at a press conference in Mexico City.

Biden did not single any candidate out by name, but Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has said he would deport undocumented immigrants living in the United States and erect a wall along the border with Mexico, which would cover the costs. This week, former Mexican President Vicente Fox said that the country would not pay “for that fucking wall.”

“The most heated of the rhetoric you’ve heard from some of the competitors for the nomination for President is not who we are as the American people,” Biden continued. “It is not a view that is the view of the majority of the American people. It’s the exact opposite. It’s the opposite view.”
