Connie Schultz, a Pulitzer Prize-winner who writes for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, is ending her political column to avoid a potential conflict of interest.

Schultz, who happens to be married to Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), said she was quitting her column because “my independence, professionally and personally, is possible only if I’m no longer writing for the newspaper that covers my husband’s senate race on a daily basis.”

Earlier this month, Schultz attended a Tea Party rally featuring Josh Mandel, state treasurer and the presumptive Republican candidate for Brown’s seat. Schultz videotaped the event and wrote about it, but did not mention Mandel. She later apologized, saying she wasn’t trying to tilt the race but that she was simply protesting the rally’s rules, which prohibited recordings.

In the Facebook post announcing her departure, Schultz said she’s eager to work on her new book and pledged to continue writing for Creators Syndicate, the independent content distribution firm.
