My interpretation of Romney’s statement was that it would be good if disaster relief were handed over to the states, but even better if it were left to the private sector. No, I don’t think he seriously would (or could) shut down FEMA as President, but I hope people think about what that means as Sandy bears down on us. Candidates who have contempt for government, don’t tend to run it very well once in power. We saw how that worked out with Bush. He didn’t do away with FEMA, but he ran it like it wasn’t a priority. How did that work out?
