Did 2014 Suck?

I’d like your opinions on this.

Around New Year’s I noticed a lot of people sending off 2014 with various comments to the effect that 2014 was a disappointing or rough or terrible year and that they were excited to move on to 2015. I think there’s some element of dissing the out-going year to get pumped for the new one. There’s some element of tradition to that. But this seemed like a lot more than that. And I’m still seeing people say stuff like this. I know, not a scientific survey. But it seems like more than random noise.

Now, do I have a friend set that just had a really rotten 2014? Do you feel this way?

My own sense of 2014 was that it was fine, didn’t have terribly strong feelings about it one way or another. My view is colored by the fact that a lot of positive things continued to come together for TPM, building on a trend from 2013. But that’s unique to me and the people who work here. For Democratic fortunes it was obviously a pretty bleak year. Is that what I’m picking up? My sense is that it’s something much more general than politics.

So let me know. Do you feel this way about 2014? And if so, why?
