D.C. To Legalize Gay Marriage
The D.C. City Council will hold an initial vote today to legalize gay marriage, and it appears unlikely that congressional Republicans will be able to move any efforts to stop it in Congress. “We can try to strike funding or use some other creative way to address the issue,” said Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT). “But it’s very difficult to deal with the 30-day time frame, especially given the fact that the Democrats have an iron grip on the process.”

Lobbying Shops Toning Down Holiday Parties
The Hill reports that Washington lobbying firms are cutting back on the scale of their usually lavish holiday parties, in light of the tough economy and stricter ethics rules: “Some said the new ethics law has put a damper on the inside-the-Beltway cocktail circuit. A Republican lobbyist said that since the gift ban, talk of holiday parties has been ‘way, way down’ and that most firms would not invite congressional aides because of the ethics rules.”
