Democrats seem certain to block Republican legislation banning most late-term abortions in a Senate showdown with plenty of political significance but little suspense. The Senate voted 64 to 23 Wednesday to advance a spending measure that will avert a government shutdown and keep the government funded through Dec. 9.

Lawmakers made the breakthrough just one day after Democrats overwhelmingly defeated the measure.

A late-night agreement to move forward with aid for Flint, Michigan as part of a separate water bill paved the way for the spending measure, technically a continuing resolution (CR), to advance in the Senate. Tuesday, Democrats had boycotted the CR over the fact that it included aid for Louisiana flooding victims but not for residents of Flint who have been grappling with a lead water crisis for two years.

On Tuesday evening the House finally voted to allow Flint aid to come up as an an amendment on the water resources bill moving through the House. That seemed to be enough to do the trick.

The spending bill was the last thing lawmakers had to finish before returning home to campaign for the upcoming election. Soon, the continuing resolution will move to the House of Representatives where it is expected to pass with bipartisan support.

  1. The Rethugliklans finally agreed to aid the people of Flint. Did Haley Barbour move there?

  2. I fully expect the House Republicans to not honor their word and either refuse or try to stifle the amendment when it comes up.

  3. The compromise just delays the inevitable backstab for Flint. Don’t think for a minute those reactionaries are going let anything with relief for that city to pass. They are a highly disciplined hate group. Dems lose on this one.

  4. !!!WHEW!!!

after all that hard diligent work maybe Pinhead Mitch and Greasball Paulie will FINALLY give Congress some well deserved time off…

When? When is this vote on the amendment and what guarantees are there that it will be passed, attached AND the water bill passed?

Hate to say it, but I think the Dems in the Senate just played Charlie Brown to the Republican’s Lucy with the football. I really hope I’m wrong.
