Mitt Romney may be struggling to gain support in conservative-heavy southern states, but out West, Republicans typically like him the best among the GOP hopefuls for the party’s presidential nomination. That trend continued yesterday with a new PPP survey showing Romney posting a slim lead on the competition in Colorado.
In the poll, Romney led a top-heavy field with 19% of the vote, followed closely by Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee at 16% apiece. Newt Gingrich placed fourth at 12%, with Rep. Ron Paul (9%), Tim Pawlenty (7%), Sen. John Thune (4%) and Gov. Mitch Daniels (3%) bringing up the rear.
Previous PPP polls have shown Romney leading comfortably in California and Arizona, two other western states with more moderate compositions.
The PPP survey was conducted February 4-6 among 400 Republican voters. It has a margin of error of 4.9%.
