Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has a new attack ad, going after his primary challenger former Rep. J.D. Hayworth for appearing in a 2007 informercial promoting a company’s questionable seminars promoting “free money” in government grants.
Hayworth is shown in footage from the ad: “Now, you may think what you’ve heard is too good to be true, but let me assure you, it is real.”
The announcer then cuts in: “Well, it was too good to be true. Free government money? That’s the lie J.D. Hayworth sold on TV. Helping a shady company to rip people off.”
And to undercut Hayworth’s attempt to run on an anti-government spending platform, the ad shows another part of the infomercial — a young woman named LaDawn Morris boasting: “I got $80,000 in grant money — and I don’t have to pay it back.”
The announcer later adds: “J.D. Hayworth. Pork barrel spender. Lobbyist. Huckster?”
The TPM Poll Average gives McCain a lead in the Republican primary of 51.2%-37.1%. The primary will be held on August 24.
