Jon Stewart on Monday responded to Paul Krugman’s criticism of his “Daily Show” bit that mocked the idea of minting a $1 trillion platinum coin to avoid a debt limit fight with congressional Republicans.

The Nobel Prize-winning economist and New York Times columnist over the weekend called Stewart “lazy” and the show unprofessional.

“First of all, lazy?” Stewart said. “Motherfucker, I’m out here banging it out four days a week, 22 minutes a day. So don’t tell me I don’t work hard! And second of all, don’t blame my ignorance on my staff. That’s all me.”

In the end, Stewart said he stands by the show’s research and his own ignorant conclusion that minting a $1 trillion coin would be a stupid idea.

“I said, ‘Good day.’ And, I’m a fan of Paul Krugman,” Stewart said.
