White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is expected to announce this week whether he will leave the White House in order to run for mayor of Chicago.

Emanuel has not yet made a decision, according to a source close to him. “Because of family considerations, no final decision has been made,” the source said, but added that Emanuel “is nearing a decision” and will announce “as early as Friday.”

ABC News reports that Emanuel is “all but certain” to leave the White House. ABC’s report is notable because George Stephanopoulos, ABC’s chief political correspondent, has an extremely close relationship with Emanuel.

Speculation as to whether Emanuel would run for mayor has been rampant since current Chicago Mayor Richard Daley announced he will not run for re-election this year.

The mayoral election will be held April 22. Emanuel has until Nov. 22 to collect 12,500 signatures and file his nomination papers.
