Embattled former House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) may have finally retained an attorney amid a scandal involving an indictment on bank-related charges and reports that he sexually abused a male student during his time as a high-school teacher and coach, ABC News reported Wednesday.
Barry Wm. Levine, a criminal defense lawyer with the same law and lobbying firm Hastert resigned from last week, Dickstein Shapiro, was listed as Hastert’s lawyer on a notice of arraignment filed Monday in U.S. district court in Chicago, according to ABC News.
The arraignment notice was not publicly available. But the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois clerk’s office confirmed to the National Law Journal that Levine’s name did appear on the notice.
Dickstein Shapiro told TPM that Levine was not immediately available for comment Wednesday afternoon.
Levine has defended high-profile clients before, including John Hinckley Jr., the man who attempted to kill President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
