Dems are ready to take a new punchline out for a test drive.

In a debate last night with former McCain adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin, influential Democrat John Podesta described the GOP plan for the permanent extension of President Bush’s tax cuts for wealthy people as “TARP”: Tax Assistance for Rich People.

Dems have taken a shine to it and are circulating it to reporters. As they hunt for an effective and accurate way to frame the debate on tax cuts, they’ll probably refer to the GOP’s TARP plan now and again.

“Washington Republicans want to hold tax cuts for middle class Americans hostage in order to provide a permanent bailout to millionaires and billionaires and in the process add $4 trillion to the deficit.” said Doug Thornell, spokesman for Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD). “That’s a recipe for the same economic disaster we saw when Bush was in charge.
