The Senate on Wednesday passed a House-approved bill to avert a government shutdown at midnight and buy three days to wrap up a $1.102 trillion spending bill.

The three-day continuing resolution was approved by a lopsided vote of 86-14.

Congress is expected to pass the omnibus spending bill by Friday.
