From The Reporter’s Notebook
In a newly resurfaced 2015 radio interview, Donald Trump claimed that he met Russian President Vladimir Putin and that they “got along great,” contradicting his later campaign trail claims that he never met or spoke with Putin, TPM’s Esme Cribb wrote. “Have you ever met Vladimir Putin?” conservative talk radio host Michael Savage asked Trump in the exchange, resurfaced Tuesday by an opposition research group and flagged by Yahoo News. “Yes,” Trump replied. “You have?” Savage pressed. “Yes, a long time ago,” Trump said. “We got along great, by the way.”
Agree or Disagree?
John Judis: “Obama is to be commended for commuting Manning’s sentence, but he should not have had to do so. The country owes Manning, who tried to commit suicide twice while in captivity, thanks. Here’s hoping that she can recover fully from the experience of the last six years. “
Say What?!
“I have long contemplated the idea of just going to the floor and saying, ‘John Lewis, thank you for your contribution to civil rights during the civil rights era. I would appreciate it if you would contribute something since then. It’s been a half a century.'”
– Rep. Steve King (R-IA) weighed in on the battle between Donald Trump and Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), saying that the civil rights icon has not contributed anything since the civil rights era.
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “I think illegitimacy is one of “the elect’s” biggest fears. The posts at the Washington Post feature obvious Russian Trolls (who could not find American idiom with a flashlight, GPS, a seeing eye dog and a map.) and literally thousands of posters who are now thinking that “the elect” is illegitimate. Congressman Lewis has caused “the elect” a problem, because he gave direct voice to that concern. “the elect’s” own words about NATO are creating considerable fear that he is a Russian mole. “the elect has been lashing out, hard, because he knows that there is a threat to his legitimacy and there is a possibility he will be exposed as a Russian agent. The more we reinforce that trope, the more trouble he is in. He is in trouble. The question is, what are we in for, because he is in trouble? Wounded people do desperate things.”
