Even If Trump Changes On Immigration, The Damage To The GOP Is Done

The Gist: The Republican Party’s prospects with Latino voters are tied to a candidate who has already done long-term damage.

Trump: There Could Be A ‘Softening’ Of My Mass Deportation Proposal

The Gist: Trump continued to hint that he may pull back slightly from calls to deport all undocumented immigrants from the United States.

From The Reporter’s Notebook

Tamar Jacoby, the President and CEO of ImmigrationWorks USA, reflected on how, after 2016, the Republican party is going to have to reevaluate where it stands on several issues from trade to immigration in the wake of Trump, TPM’s Lauren Fox reported. “It will be a continual battle for the soul of the party,” Jacoby said.

Agree or Disagree?

Josh Marshall: “Alas, this is as Trump himself was explaining, basically Obama policy: enforce the current laws and give priority to deporting those who have committed crimes and present a danger to the community. As I explained last night, campaigns routinely revise and massage policies as they move from primaries to general election campaigns. But this one will be particularly hard to unwind since the essence of it was its absoluteness. Everybody else up on stage with Trump in those primary debates was saying some version of what he’s trying to say now—in many cases, they were harder core. What Trump used as a brutal cudgel was his willingness to dispense with all the ethical and administrative realities and simply say: they all get deported in a year. No one—none who had hopes of becoming president and needing to enforce an actual policy—could go there.”

Say What?!

“To get the solutions right, to come out with your specific plan, should not be rushed.”

– Kellyanne Conway said that an immigration speech planned for Thursday was cancelled because Trump is still fine-tuning his immigration policy, a day after he denied “flip-flopping.”

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “I’m reminded of Trump’s apology for offending people. He’s sorry that they were offended by whatever it is that offended them, even though he’s right and is not withdrawing any of his statements. His “policy pivots” seem to be pretty much the same thing. He, or somebody associated with his campaign, says something that seems like a change in direction. Then, when somebody follows up with Trump and specifically asks what changes he is making, the answer seems to consistently be ‘none.’ I’m not as sure as @laughingriver that his performance in the debates will have much impact, as his supporters don’t appear to care whether anything that comes out of Trump’s mouth either makes sense or is consistent, and the Republican Party is happily defending him — even ‘What he said was so awful I’m not going to endorse him, but Clinton would be so terrible as a President that I could never support or vote for her’ is a form of defense of Trump.”
