How Obama Threw A Curveball With The Safest SCOTUS Pick Imaginable

The Gist: President Obama’s choice of Merrick Garland to succeed justice Scalia on the Supreme Court was not the nominee progressives were dreaming of a month ago, when Scalia’s unexpected death opened up a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the Supreme Court.

Carson: You Have To Admit Trump Calling Me A Child Molester ‘Did Work’

The Gist: After his surprising endorsement of Donald Trump, former candidate Ben Carson said Wednesday that he understands why Trump attacked him during his campaign, even calling him a child molester, saying “it did work.”

From The Reporter’s Notebook

TPM reporter Tierney Sneed attended the announcement of SCOTUS nominee Merrick Garland on Wednesday.

Agree or Disagree?

David Kurtz: “The outside conservative legal groups who are the hired gun enforcers of the Senate GOP stonewall against considering any Obama SCOTUS nominee are saying they’re cool with Republican senators meeting with Merrick Garland. They’re even cool with discussions of confirming him in a lame duck session if a Democrats wins the White House in November. I think that’s just putting a good face on things after the fact because this is not in the script they had in mind. The script was an absolute no. The whole point was avoiding getting into the particulars on the nominee. Just no. It’s why Mitch McConnell made his unseemly play almost as soon as Scalia’s death was confirmed to shut it all down before it started.”

Say What?!

“Kasich, I mean, excuse my language, but, you son of a bitch, the Republic is at stake. This is not like a normal race.”

-Conservative radio host Glenn Beck called for Republican presidential candidate Ohio Gov. John Kasich to drop out.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “We’ve discussed this in other threads. Sanders has made clear through his statements, which are consistent with Marxist economic theory, that he believes that problems we attribute to racism can be eliminated by balancing the economic playing field — that this is a class problem, not a race problem. The problem is, that overlooks the fact that racism has an impact on an otherwise level playing field. When two equivalent résumés are submitted to an employer, one with a “black sounding” name and the other with a “white sounding” name, the “white sounding” applicant is much more likely to be offered an interview. The economic playing field is level — you can’t tell economic class from a sheet of paper. There’s no “class-based” equivalent of being pulled over for ‘driving while black’.”
