Report: Scalia Died At Ranch Among Members Of Secret Society Of Hunters

The Gist: A new report from the Washington Post said the late Antonin Scalia spent his final days at a west Texas ranch among high-ranking members of an elite secret society of hunters.

Can Democrats Keep The SCOTUS Fight Alive All Year?

The Gist:  Democrats weren’t expecting the political battle royale Mitch McConnell challenged them to, but say they think the GOP has given them a political opening. A Democratic leadership aide called the situation “a win, win, win, win, win for us.” Now they just have to sustain that narrative throughout this year.

Ted Cruz Says He Would Pardon Anti-Abortion Sting Video Activist

The Gist:  During a town hall with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, Sen. Ted Cruz said he would pardon David Daleiden, one of the activists who faces a felony charge after creating “sting” videos about Planned Parenthood.

As Donald Trump continues to rack up delegates, Republicans are realizing that he could win the Republican nomination. TPM writer Caitlin MacNeal said GOP Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona is making a last-ditch effort to get Republicans to unite behind another candidate. On Wednesday he asked colleges to sign onto a letter urging Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio to form a unity ticket.

Agree or Disagree?

“I don’t need to be convinced that Republicans will do anything to block President Obama from choosing Scalia’s successor. But I think they protest way, way too much about the brittleness of their position and the potential electoral fallout. I think the fallout for Republican senators up for reelection in swing states this year is potentially far greater than people realize.” – Josh Marshall

Say What?!

“It’s okay that few schools anymore have beautiful white children as the majority, but don’t call me racist. Gradual genocide against the white race is okay, but don’t call me racist. I am afraid to be called racist. Donald Trump is not a racist, but Donald Trump is not afraid.”

– Excerpt from a white supremacist super PAC’s latest pro-Trump robocall message. Yikes.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “Current head-to-head polls are almost meaningless. Everything changes after the conventions and endorsements and the nominations. Sanders will be dis-emboweled (gutted, eviscerated, drawn) in the General Election. Sanders is largely unknown to the general public. The first few weeks after he becomes the Democratic nominee will define him– The young Sanders was a Marxist Socialist and an Atheist. He did and said the normal things that Radical Leftists did in the ’60s–praised Fidel Castro, called for abolition of the CIA, dined with the Sandinistas, called for nationalization of various industries, honeymooned in the Soviet Union. All part of a radical politics that few Americans will understand or tolerate. The legions of Young Republican Opposition Researchers that descend upon Vermont will find an endless supply of quotations and anecdotes that the American public will find unacceptable, or just weird. In the end, President Trump will have to decide whether to send Sanders to Gitmo, or pardon him.”
