In a Friday interview, Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts (D) asked both candidates to delay plans to visit the North Carolina city, TPM’s Esme Cribb reported. “I would encourage them to come at a later date. We really appreciate their support,” Roberts said. “We hope that they could figure a way to come a little bit later.” Both Clinton and Trump have postponed planned trips to Charlotte.
Agree or Disagree?
Josh Marshall: “There is little history of presidential debates playing a clear role in deciding any recent presidential election. More importantly, Clinton has maintained a small but clear lead for months. Trump is the one who needs a game-changing encounter. We can remember the first debate in 2012. President Obama was widely perceived as dramatically underperforming expectations with an unfocused and meandering performance. Romney was aggressive and on-point. It was a shock to the race—judged by elite opinion and poll results. But the shock proved ephemeral. The key in my mind is this: Trump is the one who needs a game-changing result.”
Say What?!
“It is the ultimate revenge to become the most powerful man in the universe.”
– Omarosa Manigault said that Trump will have his “ultimate revenge” when his critics have to “bow down” to him in the White House.
BUZZING: Today in the Hive
From a TPM Prime member: “The relevance of the question ‘Why isn’t Hillary burying this dumbass?’ will largely hinge on how things go on Monday night. If Hillary Clinton is able to successfully negotiate whatever Donald Trump shows up with, parse his bullshit, maybe get him hung up on one of his psychological tics, then she will probably pull back up to those post-convention poll levels ride that +8% as far as she can. It’s possible that the debate could go poorly for Clinton, I have consistently been shocked at Donald Trump’s ability to slide through these public spectacles unscathed and it’s possible that Trump could take control of the tempo. Many commenters have acknowledged that the media at large holds Clinton to a higher standard of performance than Donald Trump, and there seems to be a good deal of opinion out there of the mind that this bias will mean any perceived draw will be declared a victory for Donald Trump.”
