Why SCOTUS’ Decision To Halt Obama’s Climate Plan Was So Surprising

The Gist: The impact of the decision on climate policy generally cannot be overstated. It is a blow to long-term efforts to rein in carbon emissions.

Here Are Some Of The Absolute Worst Predictions Of The 2016 Race So Far

The Gist: Conventional wisdom has been completely thrown out the window during this long election cycle. That hasn’t stopped pundits from making terrible, authoritative predictions.

From The Reporter’s Notebook

As TPM’s Tierney Sneed reported, SCOTUS’ order halting Obama’s major climate plan was unexpected for many reason, even though the president has seen his environmental efforts temporarily blocked for litigation before. However, in the last big case, EPA v. EME Homer City Generation, it was the appeals court that blocked the regulations before ruling against them. And when the Supreme Court heard the full case, it ultimately reversed the appeals court decision and sided with the administration.

Josh Marshall: In addition to almost certainly ending Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign, Chris Christie probably also ended Rubio’s political career. Rubio, who is in the last year of his Senate term, has made it abundantly clear that he has no interest in running for reelection and there is no other logical position for him to take.

BUZZING: Today in the Hive

From a TPM Prime member: “Dating back to Ron Paul’s campaign in 2008, there has been some level of talk about the generational divide within the Republican party. As much as we’ve watched the party be dominated by older, whiter, strictly conservative voters, there was always the notion that a new age in the Republican party was going to arrive. Yet it clearly didn’t happen in the form of the GOP’s Young Guns, and the premature death of the Rand Paul campaign seems to suggest that not much is changing in the Republican electorate except the aging and polarization that has been written about for years. Yet now on the Democratic side, these two previous contests have opened up a rather massive generational divide within the Democratic party, which you’ve mentioned several times in terms of a challenge that Clinton (and the party) will soon have to face. It seems to me that you can see the roots of it in the audience Obama captured with his 2007/08 appeals for a new kind of politics, that quickly led to disillusionment with younger supporters once the presidency got underway. It doesn’t seem those views have shifted much over these eight years, and if anything, the 35 & Under set seems have to have moved more strongly in that direction. “
