CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) — Two officers are in stable condition, with one in surgery, and the suspect is dead following a shooting Saturday at a Walmart in suburban Phoenix, authorities said
Police were called around 6:30 a.m. about a trespasser at the store, Chandler police spokesman Seth Tyler said.
The officers encountered the unidentified male suspect at the front of the store, just pass the greeters’ area.
According to witnesses, the first officer entered the store and was fired upon immediately by the suspect, Tyler said.
The second officer, who was in close proximity, was also shot but was able to return fire. It is uncertain if the first officer discharged his weapon. Both were wearing bulletproof vests.
The Walmart Supercenter was open for business at the time but is now closed. The parking lot is cordoned off with yellow police tape.
Police remain on the scene and are interviewing store employees.
The names of the officers have not been released.

Wow. That’s the third shooting in 24 hours.
TPM…under ‘Sections’ add ‘Gun Violence Deaths’ along with a tally of those killed each day.
It’s tragic that gun violence has become ‘ho-hum’-ish.
The week is ending with a bang(s).
Two trained, alert, professional good guys with guns, versus one bad guy with a gun. The gun-lovers would tell us that this is the solution to gun violence. And while the bad guy got killed, the good guys are both in the hospital.
And this is as good as it gets for their proposed remedy. The cops can’t be everywhere, the bad guys aren’t normally going to wait to open fire until the cops get there, and most other good guys with guns aren’t going to be as competent as the cops are.
And in this best-case-for-the-NRA scenario, two police officers are in the hospital. I can only hope and pray that they’re OK. But this pretty much proves that good guys with guns aren’t a very good answer to bad guys with guns.
A “trespasser” in the “greeter area” of a store open for business.
I hope there’s more to this story because, otherwise, that’s a customer.
