The New York Daily News responded to the massacre at the Washington Navy Yard with a front page Tuesday that decried one of the weapons suspected gunman Aaron Alexis reportedly had in his possession.

Under the headline “Same Gun Different Slay,” the Daily News used a photo of an AR-15 rifle and asserted that the “maniac” Alexis used the “Newtown weapon.” An AR-15 was used by Adam Lanza in last year’s mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. Daily News columnist Mike Lupica denounced the AR-15 as a weapon “made for murder” in Tuesday’s issue.

According to the Associated Press, Alexis had an AR-15, a shotgun and a handgun in his possession. But Pete Williams of NBC News reported on-air Tuesday that Alexis brought only a shotgun with him to the scene and somehow obtained the AR-15 after he made it onto the premises.

The Daily News has taken an aggressive approach to the gun debate following the Newtown massacre. It slammed a speech in December by National Rifle Association chief Wayne LaPierre in which he called for armed guards in schools. In March, after an assault weapons ban failed in the Senate, the newspaper ran a cover with the photos of the Newtown victims under the headline, “Shame On U.S.”
