Romney: ‘If I’m A Weak Frontrunner, What Does That Make Newt Gingrich?’

Mitt Romney on Fox News

Mitt Romney on Monday brushed off criticism from his Republican rivals that he is a “weak” frontrunner.

“If I’m a weak frontrunner, what does that make Newt Gingrich?” Romney said in an interview on Fox News. “Because I’m well ahead of him.”

On Sunday, Rick Santorum, Gingrich and President Obama’s campaign senior adviser Robert Gibbs ganged up on Romney, questioning his inevitability as the Republican nominee. Gingrich called Romney the “weakest Republican frontrunner since Leonard Wood in 1920.” Gibbs said “anything is still possible.” And Santorum said the upcoming primary states could be friendly to his campaign.

“It’s funny to listen to these guys,” Romney said on Monday. “They’re saying what they wish was the case, but which happens not to be the case.” In the early primary states — and also Michigan and Arizona — Romney said “conservatives” voted for him.

Mississippi and Alabama hold their primaries on Tuesday, and recent polls show it’s anyone’s game.
