“The Nightly Show” host Larry Wilmore congratulated the NFL’s first female coach, Jen Welter, on her appointment to the staff of the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday night. But the host also took plenty of shots at his favorite target: the National Football League.

Welter was hired to the preseason coaching staff of the Arizona team to work with the inside linebackers. Her title is “assistant coaching intern for training camp.”

“This is a woman who played 14 years in professional women’s football, won gold medals and has a master’s in sports psychology and you couldn’t let her be a regular assistant coach?” Wilmore asked. “I mean, seriously, Jerry Sandusky was an assistant coach. It’s not like you have to pass a rigorous background check or something.”

Welter joins Sarah Thomas, who was hired as the league’s first female referee in April.

“You’re still abysmal on the misogyny and sexual assault fronts but way to go, NFL,” Wilmore said. “I guess you could say this is like gaining two yards with 98 yards to go.”
